In Genesis 22, we have another name attributed to God that describes an aspect of His character. In Genesis 22:14, Abraham called the place where God provided for Him ‘Jehovah Jireh’ meaning ‘The Lord will provide’. That name represented God’s character back then and also for today. It was good news for Abraham and it is still good news for us.
Isaac asked a good question of his dad in Genesis 22:7, “Dad, we have the means to make fire with this wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” In v8, Abraham had no idea how God would provide but he was confident that He would. That is called faith. The provision of a ram for him and eventually a Lamb for all of us in Christ can bring peace to us when we are uncertain of where provision will come. Before we see the "ram", let’s rely on God’s character that when we need provision, in God’s timing He will be faithful.
A few cool tidbits from this text are:
1) The place where God led Abraham to make a sacrifice was Mount Moriah which is the place where Jerusalem will be established. The same spot where Jesus would be sacrificed for the sins of the world.
2) Also, not as cool as a look into how God provides for our need for a Savior for our sins, but still cool … in Genesis 22:21, I smiled when Milcah and Nahor named their first two sons, Uz and Buz.
